Bio

Matthias Witt was born in Wuppertal, Germany in 1957 and received his first violin lessons with Maria Szabados. Already at a young age he took part in music competitions, such as ” Jugend Musiziert”. In 1971 he received the Special Prize by the Minister for Culture, Nordrhein – Westfalen and in 1976 he won 1.Prize in the National Youth Competition “Jugend Musiziert” for String Quartet.

Matthias continued his Studies with Maria Szabados at the Music College Wuppertal., Prof. Max Rostal, Music College Cologne and Prof. Michael Gaiser, Music College Düsseldorf. During his Studies he received a scholarship by the German Academic Exchange Service for a Masterclass with Piero Farulli, Quartetto Italiano, in Siena, Italy.

Among his early orchestral experiences are the membership with the State Youth Orchestra, Nordrhein – Westfalen, 1974-1977, and with the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, also as concertmaster, 1977 – 1982. With the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie he took part in performances and a TV production of Weber’s Oberon at the Edinburgh Festival under Seji Ozawa.

He had his first professional experience as a member of the German Chamber Academy under Johannes Goritzki, 1982 – 1985, including concert tours to Turkey, Jordan, Syria and Egypt.

In 1987 he moved to England, were he was for many years active as an orchestra and chamber musician. He took part in tours through the USA, Japan, Spanien, Frankreich and many other European countries with orchestras such as the Irish Chamber Orchestra, London Virtuosi and the London Classical Players under Roger Norrington. He also made recordings with the London Classical Players for EMI at the Abbey Road Studios. As member of the London Mozart Players he also recorded frequently for ASV.

His experiences as a violin teacher include teaching at the German School London, Bramson’s Music School, New York, as well as teaching in private studios in Twickenham, England and Katonah, New York.
Since 2015 Mr.Witt is living in Wuppertal and is teaching at his private studio, the Belcanto Violin Studio.
